Melvin Mills
WATER VALLEY – Melvin David Mills, 77, died Aug. 13, 2011, at his home near Water Valley.
Services will be 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Liberty Church in Water Valley. Burial will be in Mt. Liberty Cemetery. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, all at Mt. Liberty Church.

Catherine Simpson
HOUSTON – Catherine Alexander Simpson, 92, died Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. She was born Dec. 23, 1918, in Houston to James Pascal Alexander and Elizabeth Couch Alexander. She was a member of Delphian Club and First United Methodist Church in Houston.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Houston with the Rev. Larry Patrick and the Rev. Mike Childs officiating. Burial will be in Houston Cemetery. Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her daughter, Catherine Barksdale Simpson Vickery (David) of Cambridge, Mass. ; three sons, Glynne Arnold Simpson (Ann) of Ridgeland, John “Jack” Stewart Simpson (Bea) of Madison and James “Jimmy” Hugh Simpson (Bettye) of Covington, La.; one brother, Charles Henry Alexander of Calhoun, La.; three granddaughters, Cathy Haynie and Amanda Shelton, both of Madison and Suzanne Frye of Colorado Springs Colo.; eight grandsons, Jeff Simpson of Wheaton, Ill., John Simpson of Canton, Andy Simpson of Covington, La., Collier Simpson of Madison, Jason Vickery of Portland, Maine, Clark Mackey of Asheville, N.C., Lee Vickery of New York, N.Y. and Joseph Vickery of St. Louis, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Simpson; her parents, James Pascal Alexander and Elizabeth Couch Alexander; her sister, Gladys Alexander Sherrod; and two brothers, Augusta Evans Alexander and Pascal Waldrop Alexander.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Robert Potts
NEW ALBANY – Robert Wesley Potts, 60, died Aug. 13, 2011, at his home. He was born March 19, 1951, in Union County to Roy and Duvell Gaines Potts. He was the owner of Union County Seed and Feed and a member of the Mormon Church.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Serenity Funeral Home of New Albany. Burial will be in Union Hill Cemetery. Serenity Funeral Home of New Albany is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Potts; three children, Phillip and Chris Potts of New Albany and Sim (Veronica) Potts of Tupelo; and two brothers, David (Carla) Potts of Kenton, Tenn. and Charles Potts of New Albany.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Sam Walls
HOUSTON – Chesley Durell “Sam” Walls, 81, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at his home. He was born Jan. 17, 1930, in Pontotoc County to Thomas Jefferson Walls and Virgie Lee Holloway Walls. He was a retired welder for Glen Machine Works. He was a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and sitting under the shade tree while talking to his friends.
Services will be 5 p.m. today at Macedonia United Methodist Church in Houston with the Rev. Steve Lampkin and the Rev. Bobby Brock officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Houston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Sara E. Criddle Walls of Houston; daughter, Ann Smith and her husband, Tommy of Houston; two sisters, Dorothy Holder and her husband, Hubert of Vardaman and Ruby Williams of Tupelo; four grandchildren, Lynn Nabors and her husband, Clay of Houston, Chris Smith of Houston, Shorty Yearby and his wife, Adele and Joe Yearby, both of Columbus; nine great-grandchildren, Mykkie Smith of Houston, Ashley Nabors (Ross) of Houston, Megan Nabors of Hammond, La., Robyn Yearby, A.J. Yearby, Mattison Yearby, Matthew Yearby, Ashley Yearby and Dylan Yearby, all of New Hope; one great-great-grandchild, Damion Haig of Houston; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Frankie Yearby; two sisters, Drucilla Shaffer and Beatrice Hill; four brothers, Pete Walls, Pres Walls, Wes Walls and James Walls.
Pallbearers will be Chris Smith, Joe Yearby, Shorty Yearby, Shane Booth, Eric Smith and Eugene Criddle.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mykkie Smith, Clay Nabors, Ross Haig and members of Buchanan Ridge Hunting Club.

Billy Gann
VERONA – Willie Doyle “Billy” Gann, 51, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at Community Hospice at Darlington Oaks after an extended illness. He was born in Pontotoc on Feb. 17, 1960, to Roy and Elaine Robbins Gann.
Services will be 11:30 a.m. today at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. Brian Grammer officiating. Burial will be in Shady Grove Cemetery in Pontotoc.
Survivors include four children, Shelly Gann Branam of Oklahoma, Billy Shane Gann of Pontotoc, Brittney Gann of New Albany and Brandi Gann of Alabama; one brother, Jimmy Gann (Felisha) of Nettleton; two sisters, Lynne Morris (Ricky) and Diane Carroll (Matt), both of Pontotoc; and eight grandchildren, Madison, Austin, Nevaeh, Hayden, Baylie, Kayden, Kaylee and Dillon.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandparents, Walter and Mattie Gann and Jim and Mae Robbins; and two brothers, Dale and Jackie Lyn Gann.

Hazel McKenzie
OXFORD – Mrs. Hazel Cooper “Zekie” Brannon McKenzie, 79, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at Azalea Gardens in Oxford. She was retired from MP&L- Entergy. She was born Dec. 29, 1931, in Cleveland, a fifth generation native of Bolivar County.
Zekie was a life long member of First Baptist Church in Cleveland; an alumna of Cleveland High School, Mississippi State College for Women and Delta State Teachers College. She was a member of MENSA. She was employed by Mississippi Power and Light Company (now Entergy) on March 8, 1954, as a stenographer and retired as Senior Marketing Representative on Jan. 1, 1997.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Chapel of Waller Funeral Home in Oxford with the Rev. Macklyn W. Hubbell officiating. Burial will be in Oxford Memorial Cemetery. Waller Funeral Home of Oxford is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by her husband, Neil Hix McKenzie; and her son, Jack McKenzie.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar Dane Brannon and Lillie Mae Cooper Brannon; and her siblings, Margaret Evelyn B. Wilkinson and Billie Louise Brannon.
Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

TUPELO – Joan Dianne Tapley, 63, died Aug. 13, 2011, in Aberdeen. She was born March 10, 1948, in Benton County. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Potts Camp and a clerical worker.

Palmer Rhodes
IUKA – Palmer Rhodes, 82, died Aug. 13, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis. He was a member of Iuka Baptist Church and a former truck driver. He enjoyed raising horses, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.
Services will be 11 a.m. today at Cutshall Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Stevie Byrd and James Grisham officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Rhodes of Iuka; three sons, Terry Rhodes (Ingrid), Johnny Rhodes (Joette), both of Iuka and Davey Rhodes (Kim) of Tuscumbia, Ala.; four sisters, Lyda Bell Parsons of Iuka. Lillian Fell of Southaven, Doris Walker of Iuka and Martha Sue Bacon of Iuka; seven grandchildren, Nikki Rhodes Tapp (Derrick) of Iuka, Sam Rhodes (Emmalie) of Boca Raton, Fla., Will Rhodes (Lori Beth) of Shreveport, La., Callie Rhodes Grimaldi (Chris), Jamie Rhodes Schad (David) of Temple, Ga., Sara Rhodes and Thomas Rhodes, both of Tuscumbia, Ala.; and seven great-grandchildren, Mayci Grimaldi, Coby Tapp, Addison Rhodes, Bradyn Grimaldi, Dallas Schad, Jaxon Schad and Mollie Rhodes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Cynthia Rhodes; three brothers, Bill, Virgil and Howard Rhodes; and one sister, Estelle Frederick.

Ancel McKay
NEW ALBANY – Ancel Levon McKay, 83, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at his home. He was born Sept. 13, 1927, in Carthage to Grady Vivian McKay and Nadie Thomas McKay. He was a retired employee of the Entex Gas Company in Laurel, where he worked as an accountant. He was a 32 degree Mason and a member of the Laurel First Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Parkway Cemetery in Kosciusko with the Rev. Bobby Casteel officiating. United Funeral Service of New Albany is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline Worrell McKay of New Albany; a son, Robert Levon McKay (Debbie) of New Albany; two grandchildren, Robbie McKay and Kristi Belli (Dave); and a great-grandson, Aiden Michael Belli.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother Norman McKay.

TUPELO – Slayden Murphree, 82, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy McDuffy of Iuka; two sons, Randy McDuffy (Debbie) and Tracy McDuffy (Kim), both of Iuka; two daughters, Marilyn Hoing (Billy) of Shannon and Annette Thacker (Jerry) of Iuka; two sisters, Clara Yarber and Lila Jones, both of Iuka; five grandchildren, Amy Chapman of Pontotoc, Samantha Henderson of Jackson, Brandy Heitz of Iuka, Kasey McDuffy and Kaitlin McDuffy, both of Iuka; and six great-grandchildren, Zane Chapman, Alexis Heitz, Alan Heitz, Sophie Henderson, Cash Henderson and Luke Henderson.

Lucille Belue
BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. – Lucille Counce Belue, 95, formerly of Iuka, died Aug. 12, 2011, at John F. Keever Solace Center in Asheville, N.C. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Black Mountain, N.C. She was the former city clerk and tax collector for the City of Iuka. She was an artist and a long time friend of Camp Crestridge for Girls in Ridgecrest, N.C.
Services will be 1 p.m. today at Cutshall Funeral Home Chapel in Iuka with Bro. Stanley Magill officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Cutshall Funeral Home of Iuka is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include one daughter, Janie Belue of Black Mountain, N.C.; one sister, Evelyn Jordan of Shiloh, Tenn.; and one niece, Martha Kay Sowell (Ricky) of Shiloh, Tenn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alver Belue; her brother, John Dorman Counce; and her parents, Marvin and Effie Counce

Lorene Harris
FULTON – Lorene Harris, 91, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011, at Courtyards Community Living Center. She was born April 15, 1920, in Mantachie, to Samuel and Isabell Thomas Franks. She worked 25 years at Daniel Health Care in Fulton and was a member of the Fulton Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed fishing and caring for her family.
Services will be 2 p. m. today at McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with Bro. Scott Nicholson and Bro. Jim Irvin officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Masonic Cemetery.
Survivors include eight nieces, Maureen Wood (Wayne) and Faye Wallace, both of Fulton, Sue Gregory of Tupelo, Charlene Gambill of St. Cloud, Fla., Linda Irvin (Jim) of Baldwyn, Betty Shelton of Terrell, Texas, Cathy Stull (Randy) of Lawrenceville, Ga. and Mary Ann Adams (Kevin) of Alabama; four nephews, Ken Mears and Roger Mears (Lu), both of Dallas, Texas, Delbert Franks (Louise) of Fulton and Tommy Franks of Alabama; one stepson, Lonnie Harris (Betty) of Fulton; six step grandchildren; nine step great-grandchildren; and a host of great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Louis “Ned” Nanney; her second husband, Titus Harris; her parents; one sister, Lola Mae Mears; and four brothers, Jack Franks, E.L. Franks, Alvin “Ab” Franks and Charlie B. Franks.
Pallbearers will be Steve Wood, Danny Dill, Jamie McDonald, Joey Hargett, Dwight McGee and Don Wallace.
Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Harrell, Wayne Wood, Charles Grimes and Jim McDonald.
Visitation will continue until service time today at the funeral home.

BOONEVILLE – Janice Davis Clement, 72, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, at her home.
