Mike Melcher
NEWPORT, Tenn. – Michael O’Neal “Mike” Melcher, 48, died Thursday, July 28, 2011, in Sevierville, Tenn.
Services will be at 5 p.m. Thursday at Clarkson Baptist Church in Webster County. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Oliver Funeral Home of Eupora is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be 5 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Ethelean Mardis
HOULKA – Ethelean Haynes Mardis, 82, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011, at her home. She was born Oct. 8, 1928, in Calhoun County. She was a homemaker, a beautician and a beauty shop inspector. She was a member of the West Highland White Terrier Club.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Parker Memorial Funeral Home with Elder Ed Easley officiating. Burial will be in Poplar Springs Cemetery in Vardaman. Parker Memorial Funeral Home of Bruce is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include a sister, Pauline Haynes Jackson of Houlka; three nieces, Barbara Bailey and husband, Tom, of Vardaman, Debbie Cooper and husband, Buddy, of Richland, and Tammy Jackson of Houlka; two nephews, Robert Wayne Jackson and Chris Jackson, both of Houlka; one great-nephew, Michael Cooper of Richland; two great-nieces, Sheba Bailey of Vardaman and Michelle Cooper of Richland; and two great-great-nieces, Tori Tutor and Adrienne Myers, both of Vardaman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Iven Eugene Mardis; her parents, Arlie Haynes and Mammie Delphia Young Haynes; and a brother, Edsel Eurani Haynes.
Pallbearers will be Tom Bailey, Chris Jackson, Wayne Jackson, Max Nichols, Ron Nolan, Dean Patterson and Jerry Warrington.
Honorary pallbearers will be Buddy Mardis, Jimmy Mardis and Johnny Mardis.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

BYHALIA – Edwin E. Jones, 58, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Desoto in Southaven. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Serenity Funeral Home of Holly Springs.

Ray Hankins
COLUMBUS – Rayburn E. “Ray” Hankins, 89, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus. He was born on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 1922, in Lamar County, Ala., to Addie Lee and Nettie Langley Hankins. He attended Lamar County Schools. He was a current member and active deacon of McBee Baptist Church and a former member and elected lifetime deacon of East End Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served as a Seabee from 1942 to 1945 in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. He was a retired industrial electrician and a 55-year member of the IBEW Local Union 917. After his retirement in 1986, Mr. Hankins enjoyed fishing and gardening, especially growing tomatoes. He also enjoyed spending time with family, particularly his six grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Ray and Rev. Bill Webb officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will from 6 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Helen Livingston Hankins of Columbus; two sons, Tony Hankins (Mary) of Hoover, Ala., and Reggie Hankins (Fran) of Columbus; his grandchildren, Wesley Hankins of Bessemer, Ala., Jason Hankins of Hoover, Ala., Sarah Hankins of Hoover, Bethany Schouest (Peyton) of Summerville, S.C., Cara Sims (Jeff) of Walnut Grove and Craig Bledsoe of Columbus.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ervall, Lowell and Samuel Hankins.
Pallbearers will be Wesley Hankins, Jason Hankins, Craig Bledsoe, Jeff Sims, Howard Hankins and Dewey Hankins.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Men’s Bible Class of McBee Baptist Church; members of IBEW Local Union 917; deacons of McBee Baptist Church; and Charles Stafford.

Mary Sartin
FULTON – Mary Sartin, 68, died July 29, 2011. She was born April 29, 1943, to Lester and Della Ray Horton in Queen Creek, Ariz. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Tremont. She was an avid Braves fan and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
Services were Sunday, July 31, at Senter Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Mike Warren officiating. Burial was in New Home Cemetery. Senter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Arrie Sartin; two daughters, Doris Robinson (Steve) of Tremont and Dorothy Roberts (Jackie) of Haleyville, Ala.; two sons, Ronald Pickens (Alene) of Haleyville, Ala and Jimmy Dale Sartin (Penni) of Fairview; four sisters, Barbara Sullivan (Jimmy) and Patsy Lane (Henry), both of Queen Creek, Ariz., and Carol Bennett and Brenda Horton, both of Arkansas; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Della Ray Horton.
Pallbearers were Matthew Roberts, Braden Roberts, Johnathan Robinson, Jackie Roberts, Steve Robinson and Skip Johnson.

Idell Ward
WOODLAND – Mattie Idell Gaskin Ward, 81, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011, in Tupelo. She was born Jan. 25, 1930, in Calhoun County to George Washington Gaskin and Sarah Ella Winters. She was a homemaker and a member of Woodland Baptist Church. She loved quilting, gardening and gospel music.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Houston Funeral Home with Bro. John Dendy and the Rev. Melvin Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Rutledge and husband, Billy, of Tupelo; two sons, Doyle Ward and wife, Mitzie, and Larry Ward and wife, Susan, all of Tupelo; seven grandchildren, Amy Lindley and Rodney, Jennifer Ward, Whitney Ward, Lori Ward, Christopher Rutledge, Susan Rutledge Sheffield and Jay Carter; four great-grandchildren, Jacob Lindley, Anna Lindley, Olivia Rutledge and Cooper Carter; one brother, Robert Gaskin of Starkville; one sister, Mary Chandler of Eupora.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sid Ward; and one brother, Curtis Gaskin.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Elise Mobley
ABERDEEN – Gwendolyn Elise Mobley, 16, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011, as the result of an automobile accident. She was born Feb. 20, 1995, to Keith Mobley and Leigh Barrett Mobley in Amory. She was a Junior at Houston High School, where she was a Houston High School cheerleader and a member of the Houston cross country team. She was a member of Aberdeen First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of MYF. She was a member of First Baptist Church Youth Group in Houston.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Aberdeen First United Methodist Church with Bro. Truman Thompson, Bro. Daniel Herringa and Bro. Mike Dearman officiating. Burial will be in Oddfellows Rest Cemetery. Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Aberdeen will be in charge of the services.
Survivors include her parents, Keith and Leigh Mobley of Aberdeen; two sisters, Caroline Mobley and Analee Mobley, both of Aberdeen; a special friend, Brennan Pugh of Houston; her grandparents, Gwynne Lee Barrett, and Buddy and Hazel Mobley, all of Aberdeen; her great-grandfather, Lee Hill Harrington of Aberdeen; an aunt, Lynn Barrett and husband, Drew, of Greenville, S.C.; two uncles, Jay Barrett and wife, Sarah, of Madison, and Phil Mobley and wife, Gayle, of Pontotoc.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, John T. Barrett Jr.
Pallbearers will be Wes Colbert, Matthew Walker, Mabry Wilkinson, Grady Nabors, Ross Moore and Brennan Pugh.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Houston High School cheerleaders and Houston High School junior class.

Royce Collier
RED BAY, Ala. – Royce Lee Collier, 84, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, at Generations of Red Bay. He was a native of Red Bay and a member of Poplar Springs Church. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel in Red Bay with Bro. Billy Nichols officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zion Cemetery at Golden. Deaton Funeral Home of Red Bay is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include two children, Debbie Collier Jackson (Oneal) of Red Bay and Roger Lee Collier of Hamilton; three sisters, Mary Ann Black of Miami, Fla., Patsy Harden of Muscle Shoals, Ala., and Peggy Graham (Aaron) of Fulton; two grandchildren, Johnathan Wayne Bailey of Red Bay and Ashley Louise Collier of Belmont; one great-grandchild, Leland Brewer of Belmont; nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Alma Louise Collier; his parents, Pearl and Chester Collier; a brother, Ralph Collier; and a sister, Martha Sue Scott.
Pallbearers will be Oneal Jackson, Roger Collier, Johnathan Bailey, Aaron Graham, Loyd Humphres and Jim Floyd.
Visitation will continue until service time today at the funeral home.

Joe Cowley
SMITHVILLE – Joseph Richard “Joe” Cowley, 47, died on Sunday, July 31, 2011, at his residence. Born on Aug. 24, 1963, in Amory, he was a son of the late Robert Lee and Johnie Mae Vaughn Cowley. He attended Smithville schools. He had worked as a tattoo artist, a carpenter, a knife maker and a barber. He grew up in the Methodist church and attended the Baptist church. Mr. Cowley enjoyed spending time with his friends and his cat, Baba, watching movies, making knives, fishing, arrowhead hunting, creating items out of leather and listening to country music.
He is survived by his sister, Judy Lee Cowley of Amory; and special friends, Jay Knight of Shannon; Robin; Allen Duncan and Jimmy McCool, both of Smithville; and Joe Collier of Beaverton, Ala.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at E.E. Pickle Funeral Home with Bro. Jay Knight officiating. His family will receive friends following the memorial service.

BLUE SPRINGS – Inita Gail Pannell, 56, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, at North Mississippi Medical Center. She graduated from North Pontotoc High School and attended Itawamba Community College. She was a member of Center Hill Baptist Church.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Center Hill Baptist Church with Jerry Grammar and Brandon Murphree officiating. Burial will be in Center Hill Cemetery. Tutor Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her father, Virgil Herring; her mother, Francis Herring; a sister, Jolene Tutor; a brother, Keith Herring (Lois); two sons, James Pannell (Melanie) and Josh Pannell; a grandson, Levi Pannell; and David Hodges.

PITTSBORO – Kenneth Harold Haire, 63, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011, at his home. He was born April 15, 1946, in Bruce.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Bruce with Bro. Johnny Cherry officiating. Burial will be in Rocky Mt. Cemetery in Pittsboro.
Survivors include six brothers, Wayne Haire (Rose) of Houston, and J.C. Haire (Barbara), Clovis Haire (Shirley), Cecil Haire, R.B. Haire and Sid Haire (Linda), all of Pittsboro; two sisters, Hilda McNutt (Tommy) of Alto, Texas, and Jane Tebbets (Peter) of Leesville, La.
He was preceded in death by his parents; William Rex Haire and Hazel Beatrice McGreger Haire.

Winnie Brown
NEW ALBANY – Winnie Hall Brown, 91, died Monday, Aug. 1, 2011, at Graceland Care Center in New Albany. She was born Nov. 30, 1919, in Union County to William Rayford and Dona Alice Smithey Hall. She was retired from Stratford Furniture Mfg. She was the oldest member of Glenfield Baptist Church.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at United Funeral Service with Rev. Jerry Lowery and Rev. Terry Floyd officiating. Burial will be in Glenfield Memorial Park.
Survivors include her son, Gerald Brown (Billie) of New Albany; her sister, Dessie Thomas Fortune of New Albany; her brother, Rayford Hall of Reno, Okla.; three grandchildren, Debbie Warren (Mark) of Pontotoc, Amy Wallace (David) of Inverness and Greg Brown of New Albany; two great-grandchildren, Ryan Wallace and Katie Wallace; and a very special niece, Carol Thomas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschel Brown; a daughter, Joyce Brown Dykes; her sisters, Inez Melson, Rene Aldridge, Viola Camp, Earlene Hogue Davis and Alice Hall; and her brothers, Kenneth, Bud, Rex, Jake and Hubert Hall.

HOUSTON – Ray Junior Gann, 67, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011, at his home. He was born March 15, 1944, in Bruce. He worked in construction. He enjoyed spending time with his family and building.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Vardaman with the Rev. Robert Earl Alexander officiating and Dr. Noel Garcia assisting. Burial will be in Amity Cemetery at Sparta.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Brassfield Gann of Houston; three daughters, Patricia Gail Norwood of Calhoun City, Amanda Sue Gann of Calhoun City and Tina Crowley of Houston; three sons, Steven Ray Gann of Bruce, Adam Rowlett of Houston and Jamey Rowlett of Houston; two sisters, Katherine Anglin of Derma and Bonnie Sue Blount of Sarepta; one brother, Johnny Paul Gann of Big Creek; 16 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Lee Gann and Annie Mae Bowling Gann; three brothers, Jimmie Lee Gann, Gary Gann and Delaine Gann; and a great-grandson, Jonathan Tyler Harrison.

Buster Brooks
TUPELO – George William “Buster” Brooks, 90, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2011, at The Sanctuary Hospice House after a brief illness. He was born Jan. 6, 1921, in Pontotoc County to William Murphy and Mattie Simmons Brooks. Reared in the Oak Hill Community, he lived in Tupelo all of his adult life. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. During his working career, he was general manager of Tupelo Products Company for over 50 years. He also was the owner of Bamp&E Antiques. He enjoyed flea markets, selling chimes and knives. He and his wife were avid travelers during their retirement years and active members of the Tombigbee Indians Chapter of the Good Sams RV Club. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and the Dr. John Bowlin Sunday School Class.
Services will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday at The Jefferson Street Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. Chad Grayson officiating. Burial will be in Tupelo Memorial Park.
Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Earline Brooks of Tupelo; his daughter, Shelby Jo Cobb (Tommy) of Tupelo; one granddaughter, Kimberly Dawn Holland (Bob) of Grenada; two great-grandchildren, Taylor Brooke and Michael Chase Holland.
He was preceded in death by his father and stepmother, William Murphy Brooks and Delia Hardin Brooks; and his mother who died when he was 2 years old, Mattie Simmons Brooks.
Pallbearers will be John Crubaugh, Harold Bradley, Doug Hankins, Ed James, Chase Holland and Bob Holland.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Tombigbee Indians Chapter of the Good Sams RV Club.
