Susie Cockrell
WEST POINT – Susie Pratt Cockrell, 58, died Thursday, June 24, 2010, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Northside Christian Church. Burial will be in Callahan Cemetery at Woodland. Carter’s Mortuary Services of West Point is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Lt. Carol Scruggs
VICTORIA – Lt. Carol Jean Hampton Scruggs, 48, died Friday, June 25, 2010, at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis. She was a deputy sheriff for the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department with 15 years of experience in law enforcement. She was a member of the Women in Law Enforcement Association and the National Sheriff’s Association. She was a member of Sand Hill M.B. Church at Lamar, where she was president of the church choir.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the W.A. McMillan Multi-Purpose Center on the campus of Rust College in Holly Springs. The Rev. Etoy Bogard will officiate. Burial will be in the Sand Hill M.B. Church Cemetery at Lamar. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home of Holly Springs is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include four children, Yashica Scruggs of Holly Springs, and Charlotte Scruggs, Charlie Scruggs and Billy Scruggs, all of Victoria; her father, Odell Hampton of Lamar; her mother, Katie Mitchell Hampton of Lamar; her fiancampé, Dwight Thomas of Victoria; two grandchildren, Julissa Scruggs and Gabriel Scruggs, both of Victoria; eight sisters, Gloria Hubbard, Mae Frost, Barbara Wicks, Linda Jones, Shondra Hampton and Katie Kilpatrick, all of Holly Springs, Janet Luellen of Slayden and Audrey McShan of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; two brothers, Ozell Hampton of Byhalia and Shone Hampton of Lamar.
Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. today and family hour will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. The body will lie in state at Rust College from 10 to 10:55 a.m. Thursday.
Hazel Hewlett
OXFORD – Hazel Hewlett, 83, died Monday, June 28, 2010, at her home in Oxford. She was born in Byhalia. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, her grandchildren, and spending time with her husband of almost 54 years.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Rev. Frank Poole officiating. Burial will follow in Clear Creek Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Ed Hewlett of Oxford; her son, Jay Hewlett and his wife, Crystal, of Oxford; and four grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5:30 until 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

TUPELO – Hazel Davidson Grisham, 73, died Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at her residence after an extended illness. A Lee County native and longtime resident of Tupelo, she was born Oct. 28, 1936, to William Austin “Smokey” and Josie Caroline Lyles Davidson. She was retired from Daybrite Industries after 29 years of service. She enjoyed fishing, camping and her little dog, Brandie. She was a member of the Baptist church.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at The Saltillo Chapel of W.E. Pegues with Rev. Merle Floyd and Rev. Harlan Smith officiating. Burial will be in Saltillo Cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Terri McCullough (Chuck) of Lilburn, Ga., and Becky Faust of Saltillo; her son-in law, Robert Faust of Palmetto; her son, David E. Lawrence (Janice) of Tupelo; four grandchildren, David Jerome Lawrence of Baldwyn, Lacey McCullough of Lilburn, Ga., Cody McCullough of Lilburn, Ga., and Corey Parker (Suelyn) of Okinawa, Japan; three stepgrandchildren, Jeff McCombs (Karen) of Jacinto, Tammi Turner (Jim) and Sylina Hood (Greg) of Kirkville; one great-granddaughter, Madison Parker; five stepgreatgrandchildren, Frank McCombs (Angel) and Justin Hood, Brittany Bryan (Chris), Anna Hood and Bryson Turner.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, William Davidson, Talmadge Davidson and Carlton Davidson.
Pallbearers will be Jeff McCombs, J.R. Barnett, Timmy Barnett, Tracey Barnett, Justin Hood and Jim Turner.
Honorary pallbearer will be Bryson Turner.

SALTILLO – Francie L. Barnes, 94, died Saturday, June 26, 2010, at the Baldwyn Nursing Facility. She was a member of Johnson Chapel Church in Aberdeen. She was active in her work for the Lord and her faith was a living example to all.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Zion Community Church in Guntown with Pastor Sammy Agnew officiating. Grayson-Porter’s Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband of 75 years, Elder Alvutis Barnes Sr. of Saltillo; five daughters, Sarah (Elder Frank) Stafford of Saltillo, Annie P. Harris and Mary L (Ervin) Bowdry, both of Chicago, Girtrue (Charlie) Tyes of Baldwyn and Alice (Walter) Hereford of Belden; three sons, Elder Eddie L. (Esther) Barnes of Myrtle, Jessie D. Barnes of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Alvutis Barnes Jr. of Guntown; one brother, Phillip Harris of Yuba City, Calif.; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; 20 grandchildren and many a great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by four sons, John Lee, Alvin, Bonnie Lee and Robert Lee Barnes; and four brothers and three sisters.
Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today with a family hour from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the J.W. Porter Chapel. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to service time Thursday at the church.

TAYLOR – Loreen S. Tidwell, 41, died Monday, June 28, 2010, at Baptist Memorial Hospital North Mississippi in Oxford. She was a member of Abbeville United Methodist Church, where she was the song director. She was a receptionist at the University of Mississippi Student Health Office. She enjoyed singing and playing the piano, but most importantly, she enjoyed spending time with her children and family.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Waller Funeral Home with Bro. Jim Peterman and Rev. Annette Ford officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Flat Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Kenny Tidwell of Taylor; two daughters, Katherine Lee Tidwell and Victoria Grace Tidwell, both of Taylor; one son, William Hunter Tidwell of Taylor; and two sisters, Loretta S. Thomas of Oxford and Diana S. Blakeney of Nashville, Tenn.

GUNTOWN – Nancy Irene Wallace, 60, died Monday, June 28, 2010, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. She was employed by Jefferson County Division of Narcotics in Birmingham, Ala. She attended East Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Waters Funeral Home in Baldwyn with Bro. Mark Cagle officiating. Burial will be in East Pleasant Ridge Cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Jo Byars (Kelly) of Verona and Nancy Michelle Jernigan (Larry) of Guntown; three sisters, Joann Patton of Guntown, Joyce Chism of Baldwyn and Janice Thornton of Kosciusko; four grandchildren, Alex Wallace, Jade Byars, Tristen Byars and Lacie Jernigan; two great-grandchildren, Samantha Fulke and Jenna Fulke; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Mary Cox Key, and four brothers.

BOONEVILLE – Debra Ann Beene, 54, died Saturday, June 26, 2010, at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was born March 26, 1956, in Prentiss County to Dave Betts Jr. and Annie Ruth Jones. She was a member of Wolf Creek M.B. Church.
Service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Wolf Creek M.B. Church in Booneville with Rev. L.A. Springfield officiating. Burial will be in the Betts Cemetery in Booneville. Agnew amp& Sons Funeral Home of Booneville is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two daughters, Tabitha Anderson of Tupelo and Tequita Miller of Saltillo; one son, Jerry D. Betts of Booneville; her mother, Annie Ruth Jones; her father, Dave Betts Jr.; three sisters, Jackie Betts of Miami, Fla., Renita Richey of Booneville and Margie Eckford of Booneville; three brothers, Terry Betts and James Nichols, both of Booneville, and Michael Betts of Ripley; four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, David Betts and Bobby Betts.

Survivors include her husband, Hollis Milton Kitchen; her grandchildren, JoAnn Bevis, Chuck Kitchen and Chet Kitchen; three great-grandchildren, Jessica Blake, Wesley Peebles and Alex Peebles; three great-great-grandchildren, Dylan Blake, Briley Blake and Addison Peebles.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Haywood Gibson and Mollie Lanphere Willoughby; a son, Charles Milton Kitchen; a daughter, Molly Dale Kitchen; a brother, Charles Willoughby; and two sisters, Oza Mae Sallis and Evie Lee Nason.

TUPELO – Jeanette Shumpert, 57, died Wednesday, June 23, 2010. She was a former employee of the Mall at Barnes Crossing and Calvary Baptist Church. She was a member of Spring Hill M.B. Church, where she worked in the day care. She loved cooking, working and drinking her coffee while working puzzle books. She was a woman with a pleasant personality whose family was so important to her.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the J.W. Porter Chapel with the Rev. Gary Long Sr. officiating. Grayson-Porter’s Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her two sons, Willie B. Shumpert and Tavarious Shumpert, both of Tupelo; her nieces, Nancy Gilliam, Shelia Fears, Brenda Gilliam and Alice Brooks, all of Tupelo; her nephew, Larry Gilliam of Tennessee; a special friend, Darletha Grayson of Tupelo; a host of great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Evie Shumpert.

Hackman of Steens; one son, Johnny C. Hackman (Dorothy) of Columbus; 35 grandchildren, 74 great-grandchildren and 28 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Lucy Richardson Hackman; two sons, Jessie Hackman and Billy Joe Hackman; one stepson, Arthur Gunter; one daughter, Alice Burr; five sisters, Emma Martin, Grace Perkins, Minnie Hackman, Lillie Matthews and Lodean Blevins; and one brother, Urich Hackman.
