Leoda Sewell
THAXTON – Leoda Sewell, 95, died Monday, March 21, 2011, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Pontotoc. She was a member of Thaxton Baptist Church since 1944, where she held various positions: Sunday School teacher, Training Union teacher and WMU president. She was a graduate of Delta State Teachers College at Cleveland. She also did graduate studies at the University of Alabama, University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University. She taught school at various schools in the Mississippi Delta, Thaxton High School and North Pontotoc Attendance Center for 34 1/2 before retiring. She enjoyed reading, doing needlework, gardening, the Homemaker’s Club and visiting friends.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Browning Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Russell and Rev. William Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in the Pontotoc Memorial Gardens. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her two sons, Lee Sewell (Patsy) of Dallas, Texas, and Joe Sewell (Pam) of The Colony, Texas; two grandchildren, Shauna Sewell Kiesling and Joshua Taylor Sewell of The Colony, Texas; one sister, Ruby Thornhill of Pace; and two sisters-in-law, Maude Taylor of Pace and Alice Taylor of North Fort Myers, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert Cornelius Taylor and Stella Williams Taylor; her husband, William Everett Sewell; one sister, Winnie Taylor Pace; and four brothers, James R. Taylor, Curtis L. Taylor, Ralph M. Taylor and retired LTC John A. Taylor.
Pallbearers will be William Sewell, Gary Leach, Tommy Taylor, David McCormick, Eddie Carter, Paul Crabtree, Scott Sewell and Larkin Taylor.

MABEN – Kenneth Wayne Williams, 49, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at his home.

Doris Phelps
WEST POINT – Doris Marie Wood Phelps, 88, died Monday, March 21, 2011 at her residence. She was born on Aug. 1, 1922, in Choctaw County to Callie Yates and George W. Wood. She was a member of Siloam Baptist Church and a member of the Ladies Home Demonstration Club. She loved children, and she loved to grow flowers and a garden.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Robinson Funeral Home Chapel in West Point with Joe Vaughn officiating. Burial will follow in Blythe Creek Cemetery in Choctaw County.
She is survived by her son, Jay B. Phelps of Pontotoc; her daughter, Helen Mulkey (Donald) of West Point; a sister, Ruth Hollis (Bill) of Millport, Ala.; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Mulkey (Christina) of Cedar Bluff and Deana Frenes of West Point; six great-grandchildren, Melinda Mulkey, Benjamin Mulkey, J.J. Mulkey, Damon Frenes, Zoey Mulkey and D.J. Mulkey; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jethro “Bo” Phelps and her parents.
Pallbearers will be Carl Phelps, Billy Bell, Benjamin Mulkey, J.J. Mulkey, Damon Frenes, Eddie Warn. Honorary pallbearers will be Stonie Vaughn, Teddy Warn, Wayne Bell, Charlie Whatley, Ozell Burgess, Elizabeth Poss, Annie Bess Wyatt and members of Siloam Baptist Church Women’s Sunday School Class.

Roger Alexander
NEW ALBANY – Roger Franklin Alexander, 74, died Monday, March 21, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. He was born Feb. 18, 1937, in New Albany to George Franklin Alexander and Marie Bailey Alexander. He served his country in the Mississippi National Guard. He was retired from Golden Flake, where he worked as the regional sales manager. He was a member of the Glenfield Baptist Church.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the United Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Lowery officiating. Burial will be in the Glenfield Memorial Park. United Funeral Service in New Albany is in charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Estene Williams Alexander of New Albany; one daughter, Frankie Roberts (Bobby) of New Albany; two sisters, Laverne Parks and Shirley Kimpan; a brother, Roy Alexander; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and two sons-in-law, Don Levins and Mike Ellison.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two daughters Shannon Ellison and Sarita Levins.
Pallbearers will be Robert Love, Tim Love, Chad Williams, Richard Kelly, Jason Fortune, Gary Floyd, Allen Hill and Kevin Parks.
In honor of Mr. Alexander, United Funeral Service Inc. will fly the flag of the U.S. Army at the funeral home during visitation and service.

COLUMBUS – Barry Joe Lyles, 51, died Wednesday, March 26, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus.

Chester Ivy
RED BAY, Ala. – William Chester Ivy, 84, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was born March 25, 1926, in Mississippi to George and Myrtie Gregory Ivy. He was an employee of Keeton Lumber Company for more than 40 years. He attended Red Bay Freewill Baptist Church.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel in Red Bay, Ala., with Bro. Steve Lindsay officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Red Bay. Deaton Funeral Home of Red Bay is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors are three children, James Hugh Ivy (Andora) and Judy Thrasher (David), all of Red Bay, and Jimmy Ivy (Lori) of Sheffield, Ala.; one sister, Ruby Westcott of Fulton; three brothers, Shelby Ivy (Wilda), Harold Ivy (Carolyn) and Maynard Ivy (Pat), all of Fulton; five grandchildren, Randall Ivy, Daryl Ivy, Jeremy Ivy, Kristin Ivy and Jennifer Ivy; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mary Maxine Ivy, and a daughter, Rita Gail Ivy.
Pallbearers will be David Corum, Jeremy Robinson, Jack Ivy, Larry Ivy, David Ivy and Harold Watson.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at Deaton Funeral Home in Red Bay and until service time on Thursday.
Vanita Ellis
WEST POINT – Vanita Spencer Ellis, 90, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at the Baptist Memorial Hospital-GT in Columbus. She was born Dec. 10, 1920, in Ordway, Colo., to Edith Evelyn Keller Spencer and Benjamin Franklin Spencer. She was a homemaker and an active longtime member of First Baptist Church. Mrs. Ellis was devoted to her church and family. She married James Franklin Ellis Jr. on Oct. 14, 1944, in Corvallas, Ore. He died on May 26, 2007, after 62 years of marriage.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Calvert Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ron McDougal officiating and the Rev. Dale Funderburg assisting. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery at West Point. Calvert Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include four daughters, Connie Durbin (Harry) of Collierville, Tenn., Shirley F. Ellis of Columbus, Charlotte Ann Ray (Charlie) of Fayetteville, Ark., and Carol Vinzant (Ron) of Antioch, Calif.; one son, Jim Ellis (Jammie Lou) of Starkville; seven grandchildren, Amy Ellis, Cindy Elliott, Kristen Mitchell, Amanda Durbin, Harry Durbin Jr., Vanita Vedenhaupt and Ellisa Allen; eight great-grandchildren, Joe Mitchell, Jake Elliott, Emily Mitchell, Roen Vedenhaupt, Judah Vedenhaupt, Claire Durbin, Harrison Durbin and Gage Allen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers and one sister.
Pallbearers will be Brent Mitchell, Chris Elliott, Drew Vedenhaupt, Graham Allen, Edwin Ellis and Mike Simmons.

Bernice Ruff
VICKSBURG – Bernice Morgan Ruff, 93, died Sunday, March 20, 2011, at River Region Hospital in Vicksburg. She was born on Jan. 26, 1918, in Lee County to Hilliard A. and Anna Kate Stovall Ruff. She was a hard worker, working alongside her brothers in the fields at an early age. She was an excellent cook and talented seamstress, having crafted her skills from an early age. Born with a green thumb, she loved gardening and each year had one of the most beautiful flower gardens in Lee County. She retired after 20 years with Reed’s Department Store in the early 80′s. She was a longtime active and dedicated member of Unity Presbyterian Church.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Unity Presbyterian Church with Dr. John Armistead officiating. Burial will be in Unity Cemetery, east of Plantersville. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include one son, Greg Ruff (Jessica) of Vicksburg; four grandchildren, Glen Franklin Gory (Sissye) of Brandon, Bryan Ruff Gory of Carrollton, Timothy Joe Ruff (Michelle) of Baton Rouge, La., and Laura Carolyn Ruff of Alexandria, La.; three great-grandchildren, Bryanna Gory of Greenwood, and Hunter and Kendall Gory of Brandon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben G. Ruff, on Oct. 1, 1986; her daughter, Helen Ruff Gory, on Nov. 30, 2003; and three brothers, H. Roy Morgan, James Curtis Morgan and John Hugh Morgan.
Pallbearers will be Glen Gory, Bryan Gory, Tim Ruff, Mark Thomas, Chad Files and George Logan.

Dorothy Shaw
BALDWYN – Dorothy Larue Carroll Shaw, 79, died Monday, March 21, 2011, at her home in Baldwyn after an extended illness. She was born May 23, 1931, to G.E. and Rada B. Carroll in Prentiss County. She attended NEMCC Nursing School. She was a member of South Prentiss Missionary Baptist Church and a member of the Eastern Star. She worked at Prentiss Manufacturing at Marietta and Baldwyn for many years. Her pleasures were her child, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her hobbies were gardening, farming, fishing, reading and her flowers. But her favorite was her family time, especially babysitting children.
Services will be at 5 p.m. today at Waters Funeral Home with Bro. Toby Mears officiating and Billy Joe Devaughn delivering the eulogy. Burial will be in the Baldwyn Masonic Cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Sue Dees (Donnie) of the Casey Creek community; four grandchildren, Susan Harris (Barney Pannell), Sabrina Courtright (Jason), Karrie Dees (Jada) and Steven Dees (Jennifer), all of Casey Creek; eight great-grandchildren, Dakota Dees, Karlie Dees, Kassidy Dees, Savannah Courtright, CJ Courtright, Hunter Dees, Ethan Dees and Tiffany Dees; two stepgrandchildren, Dalton and Paris; and her special caregiver, Teresa Price.
She was preceded in death by her husband, R.E. Shaw; an infant son, Robert Edwin Shaw; her parents; two brothers, Tommy Carroll and Eddie Lee Carroll; and a sister, Maxine Pannell.
Pallbearers will be Barney Pannell, Jerry Mink, Mike Mink, Billy Joe DeVaughn, Royal Taylor and Fred Pannell Jr.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Eastern Star and employees of Northeast Mississippi Medical Center Hospice.

RIPLEY – Eunice Frances Pannell Givens, 85, died Sunday, March 20, 2011, at the Tippah County Hospital in Ripley. She was born May 18, 1925, in Tippah County to Will and Lillian Hurt Pannell. She was a homemaker and a member of Golden Hill United Methodist Church.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at McBride Funeral Home Chapel in Ripley with Dr. Rex Yancey officiating. Burial will be in Golden Hill Cemetery in Ripley.
Survivors include two daughters, Murtel Givens of Ripley and Amye Scott (John) of Eudora, Kan.; one son, Charlie Givens (Dawn) of Corinth; one sister, Rena Kay Smith of Ripley; one brother, Charles Pannell of Ripley; seven grandchildren, Karen Lewis, Lee Raymond Scott (Melanie), Mary Scott, David Knight (Donna), Lee Knight (Cody), Melanie Kennedy (Brandon) and Beth Hollingsworth; nine great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Melvin Givens; her parents; and a daughter, Ann Givens.
