AKRON, Ohio – Jennifer Leigh Fern East, 33, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2011. She was born May 17, 1978, in Akron. She will always be remembered as a hardworking, determined and loyal person. Her determination allowed her to complete her masters degree in education from Kent State University despite dealing with her illness. Above all, she was a loving, devoted mother.
Survivors include her husband, Clay East; daughters, Kana Mae and Phoebe Antoinette; her parents, Bryan T. and Toni Fern; sister, Judi (Ben) Rausch; and grandmother, Louise Henico.
Family and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Newcomer Funeral Home in Akron. Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, followed by an 11 a.m. service at Lakemore United Methodist Church in Akron with Rev. Jeff Gindlesberger officiating. Interment at Copley Township Cemetery.

HOUSTON – Gola Gertrude Criddle Gann, 95, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at Floy Dyer Manor in Houston. She was born Sept. 29, 1915, in Chickasaw County to Jessie Franklin Criddle and Anna Bell Wooten Criddle. She was a retired seamstress and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Houlka.
Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Houston Funeral Home with Rev. Dale Easley and Glenn Gann officiating . Burial will follow at Chickasaw Memorial Gardens in Houston. Houston Funeral Home in Houston is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her sons, William F. “Bill” Gann (Mable) of Houston, Hubert Lee Gann (Monette) of Vardaman, Bobby Lewis Gann (Barbara) of Starkville; daughter-in-law, Sue Gann of Houlka; sons-in-law, Tommy Baird of Houston, Don McKibben of Algoma; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobbie Lee Gann; her parents; her daughters, Mavis Helen Bell, Mary Jo Baird, Barbara Ann McKibben; her sons, Walter Gann, and Ruben Wayne Gann; her grandson, Timothy Joe Baird; and 11 brothers and sisters.

BOONEVILLE – Billy F. Basden, 77, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Booneville. He was born Sept. 8, 1933, to Fred and Mattie Mae Basden. He was a member of Lamb’s Chapel Church. He became disabled while working for North American Pipe. He was an insurance salesperson, worked for 13 years at Brown Shoe, and he farmed and raised cattle. He enjoyed fishing, his friends and most of all he loved his family.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the McMillan Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Rodney Brazil and Bro. Jack Whitley Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Martin Hill Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bobbie Sue Jackson Basden; two sons, Ronnie Basden and Ricky (Tammy) Basden; one sister, Juanita Smith of Molton, Ala.; one brother, Claude (Foy) Basden of Mooreville; one grandson, Dacoda (Leah) Basden; one granddaughter, Christy Basden; and one great-granddaughter, Emily Elizabeth Green.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and four sisters.
Pallbearers will be Terry Fleming, Teddy Hewerdine, Michael Stephens, Phillip Jackson, Freddy Mayo, Kenny Jackson and special friend, Casey Jackson.

BELMONT – Vicky Bennett Cougle, 48, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at her residence. She was the former Court Clerk for the Town of Byhalia.

Survivors include two children, Megan Lynn Woods of Hernando and Brian Everett Woods (Christy) of Byhalia; three grandchildren-Emma Grace Woods, Stephen Thomas Woods and Kaleb James Leist; four sisters, Gale Rooker (Bobby), Judy Pruitt (Robert), Teresa Bolton (Ronnie) and Melissa Wood (Duke); one brother, Keith Gentry (Tanya); her father, Charlie Alvin Bennett; a stepdaughter, Tasha Cougle.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Virgie Castleberry, and her grandparents Hubert and Inez McMinn.

BATESVILLE – Benson “Ben” Dion Wright, 34, died Sept. 1, 2011, in Jackson.

TUPELO – Wilma Jean Shafer Freeman, 81, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at her daughter’s home in Union County. She was born May 7, 1930, in Wilson County, Tenn., to William Edgar Clemons and Willie Marion Hesson Clemons. She accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of West Main Church of Christ in Tupelo, where she participated in the Ladies Bible Class and the Sunshiners Group. She worked in retail until her retirement. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, crocheting and reading.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Ministers Doug Greenway and Charles Tharp officiating. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens in Water Valley. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to service time Tuesday. Holland Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
She is survived by her children, Patricia Hall (James) of Etta, Thomas Shafer (Dorothy) of Banner, Michael Shafer (Rener) of Etta, Nancy White (Michael) of Tupelo, Pearlie Freeman (Ginger), Wince Freeman (Gloria) of McComb and Sue Otts (John) of McComb; 39 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren; one sister, Dimple Laine (Frank) of Lebanon, Tenn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband of 38 years, Thomas R. “Bobby” Shafer, in 1991; her husband of nine years, Wince “Jim” Freeman, in 2004; a daughter, Geraldine Escobar; a son, Jimmy Freeman; two sisters, Zonie Oldham and Dorothy Howard; and three brothers, Clyde, Claye and Bill Clemons.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and grandsons-in-law.

SOMERVILLE, Tenn. – Rebecca Bobbitt Alexander died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at Madison County General Hospital in Jackson, Tenn. She was the stepmother of Don Alexander of Tupelo.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Peebles West Funeral Chapel in Oakland, Tenn., with interment in Macon Cemetery at Macon, Tenn.
TUPELO – Irene Hester Stone Bristow, 91, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, at Tupelo Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she had resident for two months. She was born Sept. 22, 1919, in Guntown to Huey Hester and Berta Mobley Hester. A lifelong Lee Countian, she attended the public schools of Guntown and worked at Reed’s Manufacturing for several years. A beautician she had her own shop in Shannon, which she operated for many years before joining United Methodist Senior Services, retiring a food service supervisor. Mrs. Bristow was a longtime member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, and a former member of the Altrusa Club and the Eastern Star. She enjoyed being with her family.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with the Rev. Rick Brooks officiating. Private burial will follow in the Bristow family plot at Campbelltown Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to service time today at the funeral home. Holland Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, Glen Bristow of Tupelo; a stepdaughter, Glenda Bristow of Smyrna, Tenn.; a stepson, Mike Stone (Sybil) of Fulton; three grandchildren, Nelsa Stone Browning (Hal) of Nashville, Tenn., Natalie Stone and Gary Stone, both of Shannon; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; her sister, Joyce Shelton (Tom) of DeFuniak Springs, Fla.; and the mother of her grandchildren, Martha Jane Homan of Shannon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Laurence Herring and their son, Ray; her husband, Bunyan Stone; and three sisters.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Senior Adult Sunday School Class at St. Luke United Methodist Church.

LOUISVILLE – Webb Boswell, 88, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at Winston Medical Center in Louisville. He was born Jan. 12, 1923, to Herman Frank Boswell Sr. and Sara Selma Webb. He attended Millsaps College, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Fraternity. He joined the U.S. Air Force and served in World War II and the Korean conflict. While in the Air Force he attended the University of Pittsburgh. He was a navigator on a P61 Black Widow in the 418th Night Fighter Squadron, serving in the Pacific Theater. He remained in the Air Force Reserves until his retirement as a major. Following World War II he earned a degree in pharmacy from the University of Mississippi. He briefly practiced pharmacy in Louisville and soon joined his father’s pharmaceutical practice at Boswell Drugs in Noxapater. He was a Noxapater alderman for 25 years and a trustee for the Noxapater United Methodist Church for many years.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Noxapater United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dewayne Warren and the Rev. Smith Whiteside officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the church cemetery. Nowell-Massey Funeral Home of Louisville is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie Sue Hull Boswell; his brother, Dr. Herman Frank Boswell Jr. (Jo) of New Orleans; his children, Dr. Susan Boswell Johnstone (Jim) of Pontotoc, Webb A. Boswell Jr. of Noxapater, Dr. Scott Null Boswell (Connie) of Jasper, Ala., David Boswell (Elizabeth) of Kemah, Texas, Kenny Boswell (LeAnn) of Noxapater and Will Boswell (Joni) of Forest; 17 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; six nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Boswell Bennett.
Pallbearers will be Michael Hull Johnson, David D. Richardson III, Colin Johnstone, Taylor Boswell, Webb Arnold Boswell III, Chris Boswell, Trent Boswell and Zach Boswell.
