Officials aim to bring bike rally back in '12

STURGIS, Miss. (AP) — The Sturgis Board of Aldermen and the Sturgis South Bike Rally Board are in talks for the 2012 rally.

In August, the rally board canceled the 2011 event after the city rejected a contract citing insufficient funds for city services including security, sanitation and trash collection.

In 2010, the rally board paid the city $17,500 for those services, but this year the contract called for a payment of only $7,500.

Mayor Walter Turner tells the Starkville Daily News (http://bit.ly/sEFyU3) that the rally brings in quite a bit of money to both businesses and private citizens, some of whom count on the visitors to help make it through the year financially.

Turner says the rally had been held in the city for 13 years and local officials want it going again.
