Oil sightings at Horn Island

BILOXI — Authorities say crews monitoring Mississippi beaches for oil from the spill in the Gulf of Mexico are reporting patches of crude and tar balls at Horn Island, one of the state’s barrier islands, but there have been no new sightings at nearby Petit Bois Island.

Trace amounts of oil also have been spotted on grass above the waterline in Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.

The state Department of Marine Resources says all of the state’s waters remain open for recreational use.
