Okolona's Ford scores 44 in win

Okolona Lady Chieftains guard Quinndella Ford tossed in 44 points Monday to help her team to a 75-60 victory over Ray Brooks in first round play of the North Mississippi 1A Tournament.
Okolona moved to a 20-11 first quarter lead, and extended that to a 39-20 halftime advantage. By the end of the third quarter, Okolona held a 62-38 lead.
Ford is averaging 28 points per game.
All girls teams that won Monday contest in the Class 1A-4A North brackets play again Thursday. Class 5A and 6A winners Monday play again Friday.
Also Monday:
• Belmont 74, Water Valley 33: The Daily Journal’s No. 5 girls team improved to 24-5, playing as the No. 3 seed and on the road from Division 1-3A after losing Friday to Kossuth.
In this first round game of the North Mississippi 3A Tournament, Kelsi Montgomery led the Lady Cardinals with 18, and Leslie Robinson added 17. Belmont held a 45-20 halftime lead.
• H.W. Byers 82, Falkner 37: The Daily Journal’s No. 3 ranked girls team scored 34 points in the first quarter, and held a 53-23 lead at the half in an opening round contest of the North Mississippi 1A Tournament. Kyra Gulledge led Byers with 25, and Kourtney Coleman chipped in 23.
• New Site 84, West Lowndes 26: Four players scored in double figures to help the No. 10 ranked team in the Daily Journal girls poll advance in the North Mississippi 2A Tournament.
In a first-round matchup, Morgan Pearson scored 18 to lead New Site, and the Lady Royals defense did not allow a West Lowndes player to score in double figures. New Site led 38-6 at the half.
