Old bones may confirm '94 slaying

COLLINS — Covington County Sheriff Ben Ford says investigators had to crawl through dense overgrowth to reach the house where a man said he’d buried a body 16 years ago.

Ford says 53-year-old David Joe Stamps is being held on $1.25 million bond as investigators work to verify the account he gave when he walked into the Booneville police station on Monday.

Covington County Coroner Chris Daquila tells The Clarion-Ledger that the bones appear to be those of someone killed by blunt-force trauma, but says that’s about all he can tell.

Police are withholding the victim’s presumed identity while state investigators search for a DNA match. Ford said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has a line of possible relatives in Michigan and Texas.
