UPDATE: 2:46PM – Brittney Reese, the former OIe Miss All-American from Gulfport, struggled on Tuesday before qualifying for the London Olympic women’s long jump finals.
The current world champion qualified ninth in the 12-woman field for the finals. The championship round will be Wednesday afternoon (Central Time).
Reese fouled on her first two jumps but eventually advanced on a best effort of 6.57 meters (21 feet, 6.75 inches). That’s well short of her best effort this year, a world-best 7.15 meters (23 feet, 5.5 inches).
Reese finished fifth at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Rebels junior Isiah Young advanced to Wednesday’s 200 meter semis with a third-place finish in today’s run at the Olympics in London with a time of 20.55.
Young was third at the U.S. trials earlier and is making his first Olympic appearance.
Former Ole Miss athlete Brittney Reese, the favorite in the women’s long jump, will tackle the qualification round at 1:05 p.m. today. The finals are set for Wednesday afternoon.
