LIBERTY — Authorities say a 20-year-old college student died Tuesday after the vehicle she was riding in veered off an Amite River bridge.
Amite County Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Ray Austin says Susan Haskins was a front seat passenger about 2 a.m. in a pickup truck driven by 20-year-old Tyler Cunningham, of Smithdale.
Haskins was a junior hospitality management major at the University of Mississippi.
Austin says John Easley of Fernwood was riding in the truck’s back seat. He said the three friends left a party and were headed to Kentwood, La., when they approached the bridge with no rails in rural Amite County.
Austin said Cunningham ran off the edge and he and Easley were able to free themselves, but they weren’t able to rescue Haskins.
