An 83-year-old woman was struck by a vehicle and killed Thursday morning in Itawamba County.
Mississippi Highway Patrol Trooper Casey Mayo said Geneva Hunt of Fulton was standing on the shoulder of Highway 371 in the Evergreen community around 8:44 a.m. when Amber Cherry, 25, of Amory, approached in a 2008 Chrysler Town and Country van.
Cherry told authorities that Hunt stepped into the road once she was close.
According to Hunt’s obituary, she lived most of her life in the Evergreen community and spent more than 40 years working at Reed’s Manufacturing in Nettleton. She enjoyed gardening, yard work and quilting.
Cherry was wearing her seat belt and was uninjured. She was traveling north at the time of the accident.
Mississippi Highway Patrol, Evergreen Volunteer Fire Department, Lee County Sheriff’s deputies and Itawamba County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the accident and closed the highway less than a mile south of the Lee/Itawamba county line for approximately one hour while the wreck was cleared.
Mayo said Cherry’s cellphone was not in use at the time of the accident.
The Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident.
