Oxford bans Katrina cottages

OXFORD — After one Katrina cottage was placed within the city limits and others were recently brought in for a county subdivision, Oxford officials put a hold on any more units until they can study the housing trend.

The Oxford Eagle reports the city board put a 90-day moratorium on the placement of Katrina cottages within the city and on projects being developed outside the city limits, but needing city services.

The cottages were developed after Hurricane Katrina. The small residential units range in size from 400 square feet to 1,200 square feet. They’re constructed either on site or are modular.

Lafayette County supervisors approved in March a 19 Katrina cottage development on Mississippi Highway 7. The project is not affected by the moratorium so it will get city services.
