FLOWOOD – The Mississippi Hospitality & Restaurant Association on Monday named Oxford chef John Currence the state’s 2010 Restaurateur of the Year.
Currence owns City Grocery, Big Bad Breakfast, Boure and Snack Bar in Oxford.
“John is certainly deserving of this prestigious award,” said Mike Cashion, executive director of the MHRA. “Not only is he a highly acclaimed chef, he has been recognized by the James Beard Foundation as one of the top chefs in the country. He has invested his time and talent in numerous charitable and civic projects and is a mentor to aspiring student chefs in and around the Oxford area.”
The MHRA accepted nominations and the finalists were evaluated in several categories, including the quality of their operation, charitable activities, political involvement and overall contribution to the restaurant industry.
