OXFORD – Crews on Tuesday restriped a short block of Jackson Avenue that ties into the northeast corner of the Oxford Square to make it a two-way street.
The change will enable drivers in the parking lane in front of City Hall to turn right and go east on Jackson Avenue. Until Tuesday, drivers wanting to go east from that spot had to turn left onto Jackson Avenue, merge with traffic on the traffic lane of the Square, turn right onto Lamar Boulevard and again on Monroe Avenue before turning left onto Jackson. The next route will reduce the trip from 4.5 blocks to 1.5.
The new arrangement eliminates six parking spaces on Jackson Avenue, but the disability-accessible spot has been replaced with a new pair of spaces behind City Hall, complete with a new ramp into the building.
