Lee County StockVERONA – The Palmetto Fire Department is raising money to help Assistant Fire Chief Wally Bruce recover from burns sustained in a fire earlier this month.

Anyone who wants to help out is invited to participate in a live auction and then eat barbecue at the Lee County Agricenter Saturday. The auction begins at 9 a.m. and barbecue plates will be sold throughout the day at $10 each.

Fire Chief Bobby Briley said Bruce’s recovery will be a long process but he’s in good spirits.

“He goes back to the doctor in two weeks,” he said. “The (burns) are healing and he can walk but very little. His friends and family and folks from the fire department have been visiting a lot.”

He entered the front door of the old Malone’s Fish and Steakhouse July 6 to fight an early morning fire when a heat wave knocked him down. He was treated for first- and second-degree burns on his calves, the top of his head, back of his neck, ears and one finger.

The event will be held in the Magnolia Building and will include live music, a dunking booth and a bounce house.

Anyone who wants to donate to the auction can contact Bobby Briley at 322-1082.
