Houston School Board member Rayburn Parks announced his resignation from the district’s board of trustees at Monday night’s meeting.
Parks is engaged to Joanne Underwood, a culinary arts teacher at Houston High School, and they are slated to marry later this month. Parks resignation is immediate.
Parks is one of three board members appointed by the Houston Board of Mayor and Alderman and his post is up for reappointment next year. The city will fill the one-year term and then appoint someone to fill a full four-year term in 2013.
State law prohibits a school board member from voting on issues that directly affect the salary or position of spouses. That conflict of interest has sometimes been expanded to entire schools or departments where a spouse worked.
