Parole Board considers pardon petition for sisters

JACKSON — Thirty-eight former Freedom Riders have signed a letter sent to Gov. Haley Barbour and the state Parole Board calling for the release of Gladys and Jamie Scott.

The women were convicted of participating in a 1993 robbery in central Mississippi’s Scott County. Court records show the women were found guilty of leading two men into an ambush. The men were robbed by three teenagers who struck both men in the head with a shotgun and took their wallets.

The women’s attorney has said the women didn’t have prior felony convictions when they were found guilty in 1994.

The Parole Board is investigating the sisters’ case.

The Freedom Rides were bus trips designed to challenge segregation in areas of the deep South.
