Forum on Patriot Act scheduled
OXFORD – Two University of Mississippi legal scholars will speak at a public forum on the Patriot Act I and II: “Balancing Security vs. Freedom” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lafayette County-Oxford Public Library.
Ole Miss law librarian Scott Deleve and Jack Williams, director of legal research and writing, will keynote the forum, whose theme is “I am a law-abiding American citizen. Why should I care about the Patriot Act? It only affects terrorists.”
Organizers say the forum will address a new law “that may be the most severe curtailment of personal freedoms in the last 60 years.”
The non-partisan presentation will include the history of security measures in the United States, details of the provisions of the USA Patriot Act of 2002, what is known about the proposed Patriot Act II and a discussion of the balance between security and freedom in a democratic society.
Admission to the forum is free and open to all. For more information, contact Nan Johnson at 662-473-3670 or John Wages at 662-840-3706 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
