Pied Piper changes name, readies summer camp

TUPELO – Kids interested in theater are in luck this summer.
Several theaters are hosting summer camps for kids, with the themes ranging from superheroes to rock ’n’ roll.
One of those is Pied Piper, which is also undergoing a name change.
The children’s theater group, which casts students in kindergarten through 12th grade in comedies, musicals and even some Shakespeare, is changing its name from Pied Piper Playhouse to Pied Piper Players.
“We’ve had people call and ask, ‘Are you a nursery school?’” said director Debby Gibbs. “We offer children, and their parents, their first introduction to theater.”
In the past year, Pied Piper offered such diverse shows as “The Granny Awards,” a musical comedy for younger kids, and “The Taming of the Shrew,” with a cast of middle and high school students.
This summer, Pied Piper Players will host a rock ’n’ roll-themed summer camp for elementary-school students at Tupelo High School.
“The THS Thespians, and graduated Thespians, are our camp counselors,” Gibbs said.
Campers will spend their days at various stations where they’ll learn acting, singing, dancing and prop-making.
“They’ll decorate a guitar and they’ll each make a 45 record, so they’ll learn a little history, too,” she said.
The camp is $60, and that includes a camp T-shirt and photo.
Pied Piper will also announce its upcoming season during theater camp.
Brochures for the camp are available at His Hers Antiques and Collectibles, Roden’s Music, the Link Centre and Classic Finishes.
Saltillo Performing Arts is offering a theater camp this summer, as well as Corinth Theatre-Arts, whose theme is superheroes.
Tupelo Community Theatre finishes the season with a “Back to School” themed-camp.
All of the camps will include a performance to show off what the campers learn.
