Plan to merge 3 Choctaw schools postponed

By The Associated Press

ACHERMAN — A proposal to consolidate Ackerman, Weir and French Camp schools in Chocktaw County has been postponed.

Choctaw County School Superintendent Glen Beard tells WCBI-TV that the Justice Department needs more information and time to review the proposal.

Beard says that leaves the administration and school board scrambling to fill teaching and administrative positions to staff the district under its current alignment.

Under the proposal, pre-K through 5th grade students would have attended either Ackerman Elementary School or French Camp Elementary.

Students in 6th through 8th grade would have attended Weir Attendance Center, while Ackerman High School would have been home to all students in 9th through 12th grade.

Beard says the proposal would have saved $553,000 per year because teacher vacancies would not have to be filled.
