Police catch Tupelo shooting suspect

TUPELO – A man wanted in connection with an early Saturday morning shooting was taken into custody Saturday night in Attala County.
Leonard Brown, 28, of Attala County is accused of shooting a 22-year-old woman multiple times on West Main Street. The woman was being treated at North Mississippi Medical Center and was in serious condition Saturday night.
Brown is also a suspect in an armed robbery that happened at a Shannon Texaco where a man reportedly forced a clerk at gunpiont to open an ATM. The suspect took about $2,900, according to Shannon Police Chief Desiree Kershner.
According to Tupelo Police Lt. Tim Tate at about 1 a.m. Saturday, police were sent to a call that a person had been shot on West Main Street close to Bissell Road. Officers arrived and found a 22-year-old woman lying in the road. The victim had been shot with a large-caliber weapon.
Tate said the suspect allegedly approached the victim and another woman In the parking lot at Walmart on West Main Street and asked for a ride to the hospital. According to Tate, the suspect got into the vehicle and all three left the parking lot. He then requested they head west on Main Street.
“When they got around Bissell Road, the suspect pulled a pistol and shot the passenger,” said Tate. “The second victim stopped the car and ran. The suspect then pulled the passenger from the vehicle and shot her again.”
Tate said the man left in the victim’s car and wrecked it on Foster Street, close to Walmart. He then allegedly got into the vehicle he had originally arrived in. The vehicle was a green 1994 Honda Accord with an Attala County tag, ATH-027.
