Police make arrest in Pontotoc shooting death investigation

Desmond D. Johnson, 24, of 204 Woodale Cove surrendered to police Wednesday and has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of a man in Pontotoc Monday night.

Shaun Duane Walton, 25, was shot at 8 p.m. while at the Grove Apartments off West Reynolds Extended in Pontotoc.

Pontotoc Police Chief Larry Poole said Walton was shot with possibly a small-caliber handgun in the chest.

Poole said Walton, who lived at 120 County Road 51 in Lee County, was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle.

Pontotoc County coroner Kim Bedford said she pronounced Walton dead of a gunshot wound at the Pontotoc emergency room. His body was taken to Jackson for an autopsy.

Poole said Johnson called to let police know where he was. No motive has been confirmed.

No bond has been set for Johnson and he will not have his initial court appearance today. His court appearance will probably be Thursday.
