ABERDEEN – The polls open Tuesday for the City of Aberdeen’s first primary. The offices included are mayor, chief of police and aldermen seats. The second primary will be held April 17.
“Originally the general election was scheduled for May 1, but since there are no Republican or Independent candidates, we don’t have to host one according to Mississippi Code 23-15-326,” said city clerk Jackie Benson.
After the second primary, the election committee will declare the winners of the political races.
“By doing this, the citizens don’t have to get out and vote again and we’re saving taxpayers’ money by not having to print ballots, paying poll workers and renting voting equipment,” Benson said.
Polls will be open Tuesday from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. The locations to vote are Ward 1 – Aberdeen Housing Authority, Martin Luther King Jr. Drive; Ward 2 – Monroe County Courthouse, Chestnut Street; Ward 3 – City Hall, Commerce Street; Ward 4 – National Guard Armory, Highway 145; Ward 5 – High Street Community Center, High Street.
The city clerk’s office will also be open the next three Saturdays from 8 a.m. until noon for absentee voting.
