Pontotoc Mayor Jeff Stafford confirmed Tuesday morning that his brother, Richard Stafford, was killed late Monday evening in a plane crash in Jonesville, Louisiana.

Richard Stafford, 56, was the son of the late Pontotoc Mayor Howard and Ruby Stafford.

Jeff Stafford said he received the news of the plane crash around 8:30 p.m. Monday night.

“Richard was flying one of those ultralight, one-seater airplanes looking over some property he was buying for a cabin and apparently got too low and hit some trees,” Mayor Stafford said.

An avid outdoorsman, Richard Stafford was working as a cameraman for Honey Brake Lodge on the Louisiana Delta Plantation in Jonesville, Louisiana.

Mayor Stafford said Richard was home this past weekend.

“He went to Sunday service out at Steve Parrish’s church and had dinner with us and Little Richard (his son), and I’m so glad he was home one last time,” Mayor Stafford said.

“Everyone has a Richard story, and he had lots and lots of friends all over the country.”

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday in Lafayette Parrish.

“Tutor Funeral Home (of Pontotoc) will be in charge of arrangements and we’re leaning toward a service Saturday, but we’ll let folks know,” Mayor Stafford said.
