The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating an early morning crash in Pontotoc County that claimed the life of a Pontotoc County resident.
About 5:30 a.m., troopers were dispatched to Mississippi Highway 41 near the power substation. Upon arriving, MHP said it appeared a Freightliner semitractor/trailer was traveling south, became disabled and was blocking the southbound lane. Apparently a southbound 1999 Toyota Tacoma, driven by Joe A. Martin, 51, of Pontotoc, collided into the rear of the disabled vehicle.
Martin was transported to North Mississippi Medical Center with serious injuries.
His mother, Betty Martin, 82, of Pontotoc, received fatal injuries in the crash and died on the scene.
There was no one operating the semitractor when the crash occurred.
