PRAIRIE – The ghosts of the Gulf Ordnance Plant have spoken volumes through the EVP sessions and Ghost Box demonstrations for the past two years, but Amory-based Mystic Mississippi Paranormal Society plan on calling it a wrap for its annual Ghost Hunting Experience at the World War II munitions plant after October.
“The reason this is the last year for the ordnance is because we are moving on to host more events and have the Ghost Hunting Experience in different locations since north Mississippi has so much to offer in haunted locations and we want to share those experiences with the people,” said Terry Sweeney, co-founder of MMPS.
During the past two years, hundreds of curious people have assumed the role as paranormal investigators for a night to explore the mysteries of the site’s access tunnels, fields and former bomb-making facilities.
“This year we are planning for a more intense experience for our guests. There will be two solitary experiences, a historical tour of the gulf ordnance and a group EVP session in the small bunker,” Sweeney said.
MMPS’s arsenal of equipment and format of its tours isn’t much different from any paranormal investigation reality show, except it is in a local setting. During the tours’ first year, one guest’s experience gained enough attention for the Biography Channel to travel to Prairie to film a segment for an episode of “My Ghost Story.”
The Ghost Hunting Experience pits everyday people in situations where ghostly orbs, sudden temperature drops and mysterious sounds are as close as inches away.
Sweeney advises the paranormal investigation team has permission from the property’s landowners for the tours and any trespassers caught any other time on the premises will deal with local law enforcement.
Last year’s events raised $1,130 for the Aberdeen Animal Shelter for a cat house and the previous tours raised money towards a historical plaque for the Prairie RCDC.
The haunted tours will take place every Oct. 5, 6, 19 and 20 at various times. Cost for the event is $30 per person and reservations are required. For more information, visit www.ghosthuntingexperience.com.
