Prentiss school district evaluates consultants

BOONEVILLE – The Prentiss County school board could vote Sept. 7 on whether to hire a consultant to help focus the school district’s organizational and financial future.
Board members agreed last week to table a report from member Lisa Slack, who helped interview two outside consulting firms and summarized what they can offer, and discuss it again at the next meeting.
“During the interview both groups indicated that they would be able to assist the district with a financial, facility and instructional analysis of our school district,” Slack said.
For several months Slack has stressed the urgency to get a consultant started on the analysis the school district wants so that a report will be available in time to make a decision for the 2011-2012 school year.
“Remember, we only delayed implementing the restructuring plan we already voted on, so we need to get the information as soon as possible to prepare for next year,” she said.
With election of two board seats on the November ballot, however, board member Ronny Kesler urged that the decision about a consultant be postponed until after the election.
Bailey Education Group LLC of Tupelo and IMPACT Mississippi Education Consulting of Hattiesburg said their reports would include ways to improve student achievement, effective use of existing financial and operational resources, evaluation of the condition, capacity and operation of district facilities and effectiveness, efficiency and results of combining schools.
Bailey Education Group quoted a comprehensive price of $24,000 for the study, which would be completed within 60 days.
IMPACT’s quote was $150 per hour, and it would approach the project by completing whatever work was possible based on what amount the district wanted to spend.
Both groups would report their findings to the board and superintendent, which would include a five-year comprehensive strategic school organization and facility plan, objectives and action plans to address issues that are found, time lines to accomplish the district’s goals and recommendations for implementing all aspects of the proposal, Slack said.
