NEW ALBANY Most spring high school sports in Northeast Mississippi are dealing with not-so-pleasant spring weather thus far, and that includes golf.
At the Oaks Country Club Thursday, New Albany, Tupelo and Corinth golfers tried to deal with a wet course and a heavy drizzle. Tupelo dealt with the weather the best, as a pair of 39s over nine holes by Phil Davis and Jason Ling helped the Golden Wave to a victory.
“We did well today, and I was encouraged to see some of our guys’ scores,” Tupelo coach Lee Stratton said. “Right now, it’s important to get matches every opportunity, that’s why we played today.”
Tupelo totaled 158 to continue its unbeaten string against Northeast Mississippi teams. Corinth was second with 169 and New Albany third with 177.
Corinth’s Riley Fowler also coped well for the most part with the wet conditions. Despite a triple bogey, the Corinth senior managed a 38 to claim medalist honors for the day.
Fowler started out with a birdie on the par-4, 342-yard first hole, but triple bogeyed the par-4, 422-yard sixth hole. Fowler’s birdie started with a good tee shot, leaving him a 50-yard approach shot, and he made a 10-12 foot putt.
“That was a good way (birdie) to start out, and I tried to keep the pace going with pars,” Fowler said. “The hole I tripled, I hit it dead right (off the tee), and with standing water all around and trees in front of me, I had no relief.”
For Tupelo, Davis and Ling had fairly consistent efforts, Davis with six pars and three bogeys, and Ling with four bogeys and a birdie.
“I hit a driver pretty good, hit a 4-iron in, chipped up, and it was the only putt I made all day,” Ling said of his birdie on the par-5, 532-yard fifth hole. “It was rough playing today, real damp.”
Also for Tupelo, Jay Elmore and Keith Rutledge managed a pair of 40s.
Ellis Fisher added a 41 for Corinth while New Albany saw Godffrey King and Matt Conway lead the way with a couple of 42s.
