Proposed retail center could bring Target to Tupelo

TUPELO – A proposed retail shopping center at the busy North Gloster Street/Barnes Crossing Road interchange could bring even more traffic if plans come to fruition – especially if a Target anchors the development.
GBT Realty of Brentwood, Tenn. has proposed Tupelo Crossings, which would sit west of the interchange, where the northern loop is coming through to connect Coley Road with the area.
And the potential anchor tenant of the center is Target, the popular retailer shoppers in Northeast Mississippi have long craved.
It’s not the first time, however, that GBT has proposed a retail center in Tupelo. And that prime spot has been looked at previously by another development company, Abernathy amp& Timberlake of Duluth, Ga.
GBT’s current proposal calls for a 134,800-square-foot anchor store, with adjacent retail shops filling 13,200 square feet, a 5,400-square-foot restaurant and an available outparcel of .85 acres. “Anchor A” on one illustration has a Target logo on it.
The company has several retail developments in several states, and four of the centers are anchored by Target.
Four years ago, GBT proposed an even larger Tupelo Crossing center, with 230,842 square feet and anchored by two stores. The proposed location was across Highway 45 on Tom Watson Drive, on land where the Fairfield Inn amp& Suites now stands.
The latest Tupelo Crossing plan for GBT sits where Abernathy amp& Timberlake in 2006 proposed a retail center that presumably would have been anchored by Target. Company officials even asked for and received a rezoning of the area to general commercial.
But, development costs for the property – specifically, moving dirt to build up the area – proved too high, and Aamp&T pulled its proposal.
Officials with GBT did not return a request for comment.
The Tupelo Planning Department has no site plans for Tupelo Crossing in its office.
Also, it’s not unusual for companies to propose developments to gauge interest of stores and restaurants.
