Council confirms Bailey to school board
City Council, without comment, Tuesday night unanimously approved reappointment of Polly Bailey to the Tupelo Public School Board.
Bailey, who will be serving her second five-year term, has been president of the board for the past two years.
“We have a very dedicated school board, your school board ..,” Bailey said in thanking the mayor and the council for her selection.
“While we are not where we want to be, we are certainly going in the right direction,” she said. “We are looking to a lot of good things happening, and I do appreciate the appointment.”
Bailey noted the school system’s accreditation rating in the past year climbed from 3.0 to 4.7 on a scale of 5.0. However, ratings prior to this year’s had not reflected divisions between whole numbers.
Mayor Jack Marshall said Bailey’s appointment would provide needed continuity on the board, whose other four members all have served less than two years.
“She’s done a very fine job,” Marshall noted.
Bailey, a former school teacher, is a graduate of Corinth High School and Millsaps College. She is a member of the boards of directors of the Good Samaritan Free Clinic, the Community Development Foundation, and the Tupelo Community Theater.
She is a past president of the Tupelo Junior Auxiliary, Tupelo Symphony League, Tupelo High School PTA, and Tupelo High School Choral Boosters.
She and her husband, Dr. Joseph N. Bailey III, have three daughters.
