TUPELO – A community forum next week will help find a replacement for Superintendent Randy McCoy, who will retire from the Tupelo Public School District in June 2009.

“The community forum is open to anybody who can come,” said Shawn Brevard, president of the TPSD Board of Trustees. “We certainly want to hear from every single community member from Tupelo, if they so desire.”

The forum on May 15 at the Civic Auditorium will be led by Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, Ltd., the Illinois-based firm that is conducting the superintendent search.

HYA senior associates Art Young and Diana McCauley were in Tupelo last month for an initial planning session with the five-member Board of Trustees. They will return May 14 for 21-2 days of talks with folks like retired teachers, members of the Parent Forum and the Association for Excellence in Education, representatives of the NAACP and faith-based organizations.

“They’re going to be trying to touch a very broad representative group of the community,” said Brevard.

“The superintendent’s position is one of the most important to a school district,” Brevard said. “The leadership is going to set the tone and direction. We need everybody to have a voice in what that direction will be.”
