TUPELO – Lee County Board of Supervisors will consider a request to rename a portion of U.S. Highway 6 as the “Military Order of the Purple Heart Highway.”
The request came at the behest of the state’s Military Order of the Purple Heart, according to District 3 Supervisor Darrell Rankin.
Board members unanimously voted Monday to research the proposal. If they approve the name change, it then must go the Mississippi Department of Transportation for a final decision.
Rankin said the military order is trying to rename the entire stretch of the highway and is going to each county it traverses for permission. Pontotoc County recently gave the Purple Heart designation to its portion of Highway 6.
