Qualifying begins for Oxford alderman

By NEMS Daily Journal

OXFORD – Candidates hoping to fill the recently vacated Ward 6 seat on the Oxford Board of Aldermen have until 5 p.m. on Jan. 25 to gather the signatures of 50 registered voters from the ward and to file qualifying papers.
The special election will be held Feb. 14, subject to approval by the U.S. Department of Justice, and all qualifiers will run as independents. If no candidate gets a majority, a runoff will be held Feb. 28.
Brad Mayo, who won the post in June 2009, resigned last month after being elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives.
