AMORY – A third candidate has entered the race for mayor in Amory. Roy Parham will face incumbent mayor Howard Boozer and Tywan Arrington, all running on the Democratic ticket. Boozer is seeking his second term as mayor.
The Ward 4 Alderman race also picked up two more candidates with Republican Robert Paul Gillespie filing qualifying papers and Democrat Ernest White. Other Democrats seeking the Ward 4 seat include Barry Woods, Sr., William O. “Bill” Lyle, Diane F. Hunt and Robert Dykes.
Other races that have opposition include the Alderman at Large race where there’s four candidates on the Democratic ticket: incumbent Glen Bingham and Tommy Wilkerson, Rick Walker and John Hilliard.
Seeking the Ward 1 Alderman position is incumbent Dan Rogers and Buddy Carlisle, both running as Democrats. They will face Independent candidate Rex Coker.
Three positions have no opposition. Incumbent police chief Ronnie Bowen is running unopposed for another term, as are incumbents John E. Darden for Ward 2 alderman and Tony Poss for Ward 3 alderman.
Smithville mayor Gregg Kennedy will run unopposed for another term.
Six candidates have qualified to seek the five at-large alderman seats: Jimmy Dabbs, Sonny Riggan, Johnny Snow, Ruth Whitehead, Joyce Avery and Hansel “Hank” Hood. All are incumbents except for Hood.
Nettleton mayor R.V. Adams will also run unopposed as will Nettleton’s City Clerk Bill Tapscott. Running for alderman seats with incumbents designated with (i) are: Ward 1 – Ann Harris (i) and Charles Morris, Ward 2 – Chris Patterson (i) and Doug Brown; Ward 3 – Willie Brandon, Jr. (i) and Marty Langley; Ward 4 – Jimmy Moore (i) and Larry Guess; At-Large – Kirk Lindsey (i).
Ellie “Pete” Vaughan III is seeking the mayor’s position in Hatley. Gary Johnson (i) is running for alderman Ward 1, Joe Benton (i) Ward 2, Sarah Morgan for Ward 3, George King (i) Ward 4, and Justin Farrar for alderman at-large.
Sherlon Scott is running for mayor of Gattman. Candidates for alderman include: Danny Scott, Jamie Tucker, Wayne Downey (i), Scotty Bellamy, Elizabeth McKay (i), Tommie Jean Bailey (i) and Edna West (i).
The qualifying deadline was Friday, March 6. The primaries are set for May 5, with a runoff on May 19 if necessary. The general election is June 2.
