Rankings shake up after week No. 2

By Brandon Speck/NEMS Daily Journal

Bruce has outscored its first two opponents 87-8 and remains atop the Journal’s week 3 Small School High School Football Rankings.
The Trojans are at Coffeeville Friday. Falkner moved two spots to No. 2. New entrant at No. 3, East Webster hosts Weir Friday. The Wolves knocked off previously ranked small school Okolona last week. Baldwyn and Calhoun City each fell two spots after losses.
Still top-ranked 3A/4A school Lafayette puts its 34-game win streak on the line in a televised game at No. 2 large school Oxford on Thursday in the Crosstown Classic. The game will be shown live on Fox affiliates as part of C Spire’s “Bright Lights” series.
No. 2 Amory and No. 4 Aberdeen are scheduled for the 76th annual A-Game Friday in Aberdeen.
Top-ranked large school West Point travels to Columbus Friday after an off-week. Oxford moved a spot to No. 2 and Tupelo moved back into the rankings at No. 3. It hosts former No. 2 Starkville this week.
A DIFFERENT TISHOMINGO
Tishomingo County has gone 5-27 over the past three seasons, 2-9 last season in Lanny Jones’ first at the helm. There was preseason talk that the team would be much improved.
“The kids worked hard and that continued through the summer,” Jones said. “I think people just saw how our kids had changed. They started looking like football players.”
Tish beat Alcorn Central 72-6 Friday to pick up its first win after a 12-point loss to Byhalia to open the season.
Gabe Butler caught two touchdown passes and scored on a 65-yard punt return.
“We just executed. We had six turnovers the week before,” Jones said. “We did things right. Defensively we played lights out. Our kids were really prepared.”
GAME OF THE WEEK
Friday’s Game of the Week is Starkville at Tupelo. Starkville is 0-2. Tupelo (1-1) earned its first win of the season Friday against Center Hill.
