STARKVILLE — The city of Starkville has collected almost 25 tons of recyclable material since launching its program at single-family homes earlier this month.
The city began free curbside recycling pickup at single-family homes whose residents’ trash is picked up by the Starkville Sanitation Department. More than 1,000 residents have signed up for the curbside pickup program so far.
Recycling manager Joe Bell tells The Commercial Dispatch in Columbus that the program is being expanded to downtown businesses.
City officials say the goal for December is to set up recycling bins along Main Street so shoppers can recycle items including cups, cans and bags instead of tossing them in the trash.
Starkville collects office paper, catalogs and magazines, cardboard, plastics, scrap metal, aluminum cans, and all types of batteries.
