‘Remember the Titans’ coach to speak at MSU

STARKVILLE – The high school coach portrayed in the movie “Remember the Titans” will speak on Tuesday at Mississippi State University.

Coach Herman Boone, played by actor Denzel Washington in the 2000 movie, gained national notoriety for accomplishments on and off the field in leading the desegregation of his Virginia school’s football team during the 1970s.

Boone’s address is at 5:30 p.m. in the Colvard Student Union’s Foster Ballroom. It is free and open to all and will include a screening of the movie and a question-and-answer period.

“We were looking to combine an inspirational speech with a discussion of racial issues because both are important topics,” said Michael Hogan, president of the sponsoring Student Association. “We also choose Coach Boone because we feel the movie still is impactful.”
