JACKSON — U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, who represents the 2nd District of Mississippi, is being mentioned as a possible candidate to be the secretary of Homeland Security.
Thompson is former chair of the House Homeland Security Committee and currently is the ranking member of the Committee. President Barack Obama is looking to select a new Homeland Security secretary because Janet Napolitano is stepping down.
If Thompson was selected, it would create a hotly competitive race to fill the vacancy in Mississippi’s only majority minority congressional district.
It would put former state Rep. George Flaggs, D-Vicksburg in an interesting position. Flaggs has long been interested in the post if Thompson should step aside, but Flaggs has just been sworn in as mayor of Vicksburg.
