OXFORD – The University of Mississippi Associated Student Body Senate voted Tuesday to table a proposal to choose a replacement for the honorary title “Colonel Reb.”
For decades, the title was given each year to a popular male student, analogous to the female honor, “Miss Ole Miss.”
On the last day of the former ASB cabinet’s term, it voted to end the “Colonel Reb” title. That legislation gave until April 30 to choose a new name, according to the Daily Mississippian.
In 2003, the university retired the sidelines mascot that shared the Colonel Reb name after complaints that the image was too closely connected to the Confederacy.
