The Reshoring Opportunities Workshop being held Wednesday and Thursday focuses on creating jobs in Mississippi by bringing jobs back from overseas.

The free workshop at the Itawamba Community College Belden Center in Tupelo is geared toward helping companies explore reshoring opportunities with the goal of accelerating the trend of bringing back jobs to the United States, officials said.

The Mississippi Make it in America (MMIIA) group was awarded one of only 10 nationwide grants last year to establish a program it called “Reshoring Advanced Manufacturing Jobs in Mississippi: Enhancing Skills and Building Competitiveness.”

Dr. Jay Tice, a vice president of Innovate Mississippi and director of InnovateMEP Mississippi, a partner with MMIIA, said the three-year program, which launched late last year, is committed to creating or saving 750 jobs and having an economic impact of $40 million for the state.

This week’s workshops are the same each day. From 10:30 a.m. to 1:15, a reshoring presentation “will cover concepts and trends and will also introduce the ‘Total Cost of Ownership’ tool, which companies can use to analyze and compare overall costs of manufacturing in the United States versus overseas,” Tice said. “In addition to the mid-day presentation, companies that are interested in pursuing reshoring are encouraged to schedule either a morning – before the presentation – or an afternoon breakout session (after the presentation). These sessions will provide an opportunity for OEM and supplier companies to work with the MMIIA team to identify opportunities to strengthen their collective supply chains. After the breakout session, the MMIIA team will work with the companies to take action on these items.”

The workshops – specifically the breakout sessions – are targeted at manufacturers and their supplier chains, but everyone is invited, Tice said.

The presentation from 10:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. is geared toward general audiences, including economic developers with an interest in reshoring, he said.
