BYHALIA — A retired California Highway Patrolman died after he veered off U.S. Highway 78 near Byhalia, Miss., and crashed his pickup into the back of a tractor-trailer.

Marshall County Coroner James Richard Anderson says 71-year-old David Earl Martin, of Magalia, Calif., died at the scene.

Anderson tells The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/10THnhg ) the crash occurred at 10:30 a.m. Thursday on U.S. 78, one-fourth of a mile from the Byhalia exit.

He said Martin was headed eastbound when witnesses said he veered off the highway and crashed into the tractor-trailer that was parked in an emergency lane.

Anderson says Martin’s family said he was headed to Georgia to help move a family friend.
