Ripley man dies when ATV struck by vehicle

A former Tippah County constable died when the ATV he was driving was struck by a vehicle Sunday afternoon.

At approximately 2:40 p.m., Leroy Derrick, 93, of Ripley, apparently attempted to cross state Highway 4, near County Road 548, on his Honda Rancher ATV and pulled into the path of a GMC Acadia, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Derrick died at the scene.

The driver of the SUV was not injured.

Derrick served as a constable of Tippah County for several years before retiring.

The accident remains under investigation.
