Washington, D.C.’s Roll Call and State Sen. Merle Flowers’ Facebook page today confirmed the DeSoto Countian has taken his name out of the 1st Congressional District race in 2010 as a Republican.
That may have set Tupelo’s state Sen. Alan Nunnelee free as the lone GOP candidate to face incumbent U.S. Rep. Travis Childers, a conservative Democrat from Booneville.
Details were sketchy, but political watchers say GOP Gov. Haley Barbour and the national Republicans may have made the call – they want to re-take the seat occupied more than a decade by Roger Wicker of Tupelo, now a Republican U.S. senator, and prefer to try without a primary battle.
Meanwhile, Nunnelee is on a districtwide “listening tour” to talk with constituents about a possible House run.
