JACKSON — Republican congressional candidate Henry Ross is paying a $1,000 fine for failing to test fuel tanks at his north Mississippi gas station.
Ross is paying the civil fine to the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, which found that he failed to test one or more of the gas tanks at his vacant Eupora station within a required three-year period.
Ross, a lawyer and former Eupora mayor, has also agreed, in a Jan. 9 order, to conduct the test.
Ross tells The Associated Press that a gasoline distributor was responsible for testing at the gas station and has now done the work, but was so late that officials fined him.
Ross is one of two candidates challenging Tupelo’s Alan Nunnelee, the incumbent Republican congressman, in the March 13 primary.
