Roundup: Starkville Academy Volunteers remain unbeaten

The Starkville Academy Volunteers remained unbeaten Friday night with a 42-8 road victory against Hillcrest Academy in an MAIS AAA District I opener for both teams.
Ryan Mann scored on two 6-yard runs and a 3-yard run for the Vols (5-0, 1-0).
Colby Runnels scored on runs of 4 and 27 yards for the winners while Drew Pellum opened Starkville’s scoring with a 21-yard TD scamper in the second quarter. Jonathan Burton connected on all six extra points for Starkville Academy.
The Vols, coached by former Itawamba Community College head coach Jeff Terrill, have given up just 32 points in five games.
Hillcrest scored its touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 7-yard run by T.J. Knowles.
The Vols travel again next week, playing a district game at Jackson Prep.

New Albany 14, Corinth 0:
Quarterback Spencer Day scored on a 5-yard run with 4:37 remaining in the fourth quarter to lift the Bulldogs (4-1) to a win in the 61st meeting of the series.
“It’s a battle to the end every time New Albany and Corinth play,” New Albany coach Ron Price said.
Day, who was 4 of 5 passing for 39 yards, connected with Josh Hardin for a 29-yard TD in the second quarter to give New Albany a 7-0 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs finished with 259 yards total offense. Corinth managed 146 yards offense.
“Our defense is doing an outstanding job,” Price said. “They are creating turnovers and making big plays.”
Bruce 21, Ackerman 18: Demetris Evans scored on a 1-yard fumble recovery in the fourth quarter to lift the Trojans (4-1) to their win.
Bruce took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Jay Armstrong’s 3-yard run. The Trojans added a safety in the third quarter and scored on a 16-yard pass to Tae Armstrong from Davis Brown.
Ackerman (2-3) took the lead, 18-15, earlier in the fourth quarter on a field goal.
Calhoun City 20, Eupora 6: Calhoun City, the Journal’s No. 1-ranked small school, had three players score in its victory.
Tavion Primer had a 46-yard run and Tae Lawrence a 4-yard run in the first quarter to give the Wildcats (5-0) a 14-0 first-quarter lead.
Cartin McBride’s 28-yard return of a fumble made it 20-0, before Vandy Smith’s 36-yard TD run for Eupora (3-2).
Vardaman 31, Smithville 0: Donta Walker scored on a 76-yard pass reception and a 71-yard run to lead the Rams (2-2, 2-0) to a Division 1-1A win.
Lavorris Hatchett and Evander Holmes also scored TDs for Vardaman.
Booneville 21, Tishomingo County 6: Dylan Henley passed for two touchdowns – 33 yards to Shaq Prather and 23 yards to Jake Miller – to lead the Blue Devils (3-2).
Xzavier Rogers led off Booneville’s scoring with a 1-yard TD in the second quarter. Bobby Felker had a 1-yard run for Tishomingo County (1-4).
South Pontotoc 25, North Panola 24: The Cougars (2-3) rallied from an early two-TD deficit to win.
A 4-yard run by Matt Adams, his second of the game, proved to be the game-winner. He scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter.
Alex Pannell added a 6-yard TD run for the winners, Ryan Roberts recorded a safety and Matt Collums kicked a field goal.
East Webster 12, Walnut 7: Codie McKee scored on a 61-yard run and a 1-yard run in the third quarter to lead the Wolverines (3-2).
Dominic Steele had a 46-yard TD run for Walnut (3-2).
Holly Springs 6, Coahoma AHS 0: Peter Thigpen scored on a 2-yard run in the third quarter to lead the Hawks (1-4) to their first victory of the season. Coahoma AHS (0-5) remains winless.
Ripley 47, Union County 6: Isaac Bails, Justin Terry and Sedabris Boyd scored two touchdowns apiece to lead the Tigers (2-3).
Bails scored on runs of 42 and 10 yards, Terry on runs of 77 and 6 yards and Boyd on runs of 12 and 11 yards.
Cody James added a 60-yard run for the winners while Vadale Rucker had a 9-yard TD for Union County (0-4).
