Saltillo fire department asks city for help

By NEMS Daily Journal

SALTILLO – Fire Chief Mark Nowell said his department needs to add another firefighter. The new firefighter would work from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday – a shift that Nowell said has weak volunteer turnout.
Hiring an additional firefighter requires an extra $19,000 in the budget.
Mayor Bill Williams said Thursday he doesn’t support the additional employee because of the city’s revenue constraints.
Yet, aldermen Scott Knight and Brad Woodcock said they would support the extra expenditure.
The additional firefighting position will be part of the city’s public hearing Tuesday night on the budget. The meeting starts at 5:45 p.m. at Saltillo City Hall.
