Saltillo offers dump site for residents

SALTILLO – Spring is approaching and there is no better time to clean up your front yard and toss out that ugly couch or rusted treadmill that is an eyesore to the neighborhood.
The City of Saltillo is hosting its annual clean up in April, providing a large garbage bin behind city hall for residents to use.
“It’s a public service we try to offer every year,” said Brian Grissom, building and zoning administrator. “It’s a chance for residents to get rid of garbage and also a way to help beautify Saltillo.”
Saltillo residents can take their garbage to the garbage bin behind city hall from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturdays.
“It’s a hard thing to do, to get rid of bigger items – things you can’t just put in the street,” Grissom said. “It’s truly amazing how much stuff gets brought. We have to get the garbage bin emptied multiple times so it’s definitely having an impact.”
Paint, tires and hazardous chemicals cannot be disposed of in the city’s garbage bin.
Residents can bring batteries but must make sure to leave them with an attendant or contact Grissom at 213-5407.
Anyone bringing metal is asked to put it in a pile behind the bin.
“We actually try to divide it up and put the metal to the side,” Grissom said. “We’ve gotten enough metal in previous years to sell and pay for the Dumpster.”
He said they see everything from couches to lawn mowers.
The bin will be behind city hall until the end of May.
