Saltillo teacher suspended for inappropriate text messages

SALTILLO – Saltillo High School English teacher Hope Johns has been taken out of the classroom because of inappropriate text messages with a male student at the school.
Lee County Schools Superintendent Mike Scott said he could not comment because it is a personnel matter.
Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson said that as of now, no crime has been committed and that the issue has been turned over to the district attorney’s office.
Johnson said his department was contacted by the superintendent to be a liaison between the school district and the district attorney’s office. Johnson said that a phone was confiscated.
The district attorney’s office had no comment on the situation.
According to Lee County School District policy, non-school-related communications such as e-mails, telephone calls and text messages between a teacher and a student are grounds for dismissal.
The district cannot dismiss any of its staff without school board approval. The Lee County School Board’s next meeting is Tuesday.
