Schedule conflict delays murder trial

TUPELO – The prosecution will close its case today in the Christopher Brandon murder trial.
The state planned to wrap up its case Wednesday afternoon, but its final witness, the doctor from Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center in Memphis who treated the child, had a conflict and couldn’t be in court until today.
Circuit Court Judge Jim Pounds adjourned the trial shortly before 3 p.m. with instructions to resume at 9 a.m. today.
Brandon, 30, of Verona is charged with depraved-heart murder for the 2007 death of his live-in girlfriend’s 15-month-old son, Xavier Staples. Depraved-heart murder is a murder that is not a premeditated act, but is committed without any regard for human life.
The defense is expected to present its case to the jury today after the doctor’s testimony, according to Marilyn Reed at the district attorney’s office.
Pounds said he hopes to have all the testimony heard today and to have closing arguments complete by Friday morning.
If convicted, Brandon faces life in prison.
